Educational Background

An astute scholar, Brian studied at two lucrative institutions, namely, Mississippi State University, where he earned his Broadcast Meteorology Certification in Geoscience as well as his Bachelor of Science in Geoscience, and Washington State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and his Master of Arts in Strategic Communication, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

Career

Brian kicked off his career1 working at CNN as a student reporter between 1999 and 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia. He served as a reporter for the CNN Student Bureau, CNN Student News, and CNN Newsroom. While at CNN, he was able to cover the WTO riots in Seattle and was the winner of several National Scholastic Press Association and Journalism Education awards.

Thereafter in 2003, MacMillan joined Destination Marketing, where he served as a TV and radio producer up until 2007. In August 2007, he left Destination Marketing and joined KOHD-TV as a weather anchor and reporter. While at KOHD, he was part of the inaugural news team for the ABC affiliate and was tasked with conducting weather forecasts, taking photographs from the KOHD helicopter during breaking news events, and also coordinating storm spotter training classes.

After a successful two-year stint at KOHD, Brian joined FOX 12 (Meredith Corporation), where he was employed as a meteorologist and reporter. With an impressive track record, he has garnered numerous accolades, including AP and Emmy nominations. Brian has cultivated a significant social media presence, amassing nearly 30,000 followers on his platforms and managing FOX 12’s social media pages with almost 1 million followers.

Beyond his on-air duties, he is deeply engaged in community outreach, having overseen numerous events and visited over 150 classrooms. Brian is also the creator and host of the highly successful Northwest Weather Podcast and FOX 12 Weather Podcast, boasting over 350,000 downloads. His contributions extend to internal station initiatives, serving on the Employee Advisory Committee and the Safety Team.

In October 2021, FOX 13 Seattle sought Brian’s expertise in the realm of meteorology and journalism and hired him as a morning meteorologist. He soon became one of the station’s most valuable employees and currently serves as its chief meteorologist, a role he was tasked with in October 2023.

Brian MacMillan is happily married to his beautiful wife, Ashley MacMillan. He considers Ashley her best friend, and the lovely duo share a deep sense of companionship, which is evident in their videos and photos of each other on their respective social media accounts.
